Already the largest employment sector in the U.S.
economy, with 12.5 million wage and salary workers and another 382,000
self-employed workers in 2002, job growth in the healthcare sector is
expected to outpace that of the overall economy over the next decade.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS),
healthcare jobs will account for 10
of the 20 fastest growing occupations between 2002 and 2012. The BLS projects that about 16 percent of all new wage and
salary jobs created between 2002 and 2012 will be healthcare jobs - 3.5
million jobs, which is more than in any other industry.
